BMI aka Body Mass Index. Ever heard of it? It’s one of those acronyms that you may have heard quite often, but aren’t really sure what it is.

What is BMI?

The idea behind the Body Mass Index (BMI) is to calculate your relative body fat level based on your weight and height. (Some calculators take in additional factors, including age and waist circumference.) This ratio is then used to determine  whether your BMI is over or under weight, and if that weight could cause or be an indicator of health complications.

Excess body fat, especially the fat around your organs (visceral), can cause a variety of health complications including heart disease, gallstones, high blood pressure, diabetes and breathing impairment.

Limitations of the BMI Scale

BMI LimitationDespite being effective for a general assessment of overall health risks, there are a few circumstances where the BMI calculation, may underestimate body fat in those who have lost muscle, including the elderly and ill, as well as overestimate body fat in those who have a muscular build.

NOTE:  For most people, the BMI scale is a relatively accurate indicator of fitness. Too many overweight or obese people use the limitation of the BMI not accounting for heavy muscle tone as an excuse to not acknowledge their true health condition. Even people with heavy muscle tone can be overweight or obese. If you feel your BMI does not accurately reflect your health, hydrostatic water weighing will give you a very, very accurate body fat percentage, to help you determine if your BMI was skewed.

What’s the Purpose of BMI?

It is important to understand, calculating your BMI will not diagnose or predict a disease or illness. It is meant to be an approximate assessment of your overall risk of certain weight or excess body fat related illnesses. Even with the limitations of the small percentage of people who’s body composition falls outside the norm (such as heavily-muscled bodybuilders), for most people, your BMI can help you understand if you’re at a healthy weight and help you set a healthy goal weight, if you are under or over that ideal weight.

The BMI percentage result is compared to a BMI chart. The chart separates the levels into three main categories. Those categories are as follows:

  • Under weight for your age and height
  • Normal weight for your age and height
  • Over weight for your age and height
