According to the SMART method, your goals should be as follows:

  • Specific – Your fitness goals should be clear, easy to understand and specific. Instead of “I plan to lose weight”, use “I plan to lose 10 pounds in 3 months”. Breaking your fitness goals down into manageable pieces will ensure you succeed.
  • Measurable – A specific fitness goal must be quantifiable so you know when you achieve it. Making your goals measurable also allows you to evaluate your progress.
  • Attainable – When setting good fitness goals, you must be able to attain them, so set goals that are not too hard or too easy. This will allow you to test your abilities, know your limits and not get discouraged.
  • Relevant- Your fitness goals need to be relevant to your personal needs and interests. It does not make much sense to bench press 300 pounds if you are training for a swimming competition.
  • Time Bound – All good fitness goals must have a deadline to keep you focused and on track with your vision. Be sure to pick deadlines accordingly and be patient with your fitness training.
