People think doing more squats and running extra miles burns off excess calories. Sure. However, it’s not that simple when you keep eating double cheese burgers, fries and chocolate frosted doughnuts. You have to give up a bad diet if you really want to make a healthy change.
Truth is, the burn-and-eat (too much!) mentality is dangerous for your health. Simply eating ANYTHING you want just won’t cut it. To get fit, you have to cut calories, EAT RIGHT and exercise more.
There are many reasons why you need to keep your diet in order. Here’s what I learned about the importance of nutrition with proper workout.
5 Reasons Why You Can’t Out-Exercise a Bad Diet
1. Not All Calories Are the Same
“A calorie is a calorie,” they say. It doesn’t matter where it comes from. This myth tricks so many people, so don’t believe it! It’s important to eat good carbs from vegetables and low-glycemic fruits. You should also get lean protein from healthy organic meat.
Think about it. 100 calories of cookies is NOT the same as 100 calories of broccoli. They don’t have the same effect on your body. Cookies are high in sugar and carbs. It increases insulin levels that trigger fat storage. Broccoli is rich in fiber and is a good source of healthy carbs. Unlike those cookies, it won’t make your body store excess fat.
2. Low Fitness Level and Weight Loss Results
Unhealthy meals don’t have the right fuel for workouts. Cupcakes and sodas aren’t enough to sustain you through a HIIT session or a round of track. If you don’t get the right nutrients, you can’t train at your peak. This keeps you from doing intense exercise and improving your fitness level. The result: you won’t lose as much fat.
What’s the right pre-workout fuel? You need a combination of good carbs and protein to help your muscles recover. Make sure to get enough healthy fat, vitamins A and D, and omega-3 into your diet. Also, doing intense exercise doesn’t justify binge eating. There’s no sense in doing cardio if you’ll just eat more than you should. Again, you can’t just out-exercise a bad diet.
3. Bad Diets Make You Feel Sluggish
Which brings us to number 3. Not eating right can directly affect your mood. Your body can’t get the nutrients it needs from sugary snacks and greasy foods. High-calorie meals will make you feel slow and less motivated to workout. This sends you in a never-ending loop of exercise avoidance. However, if you eat well, you’re more motivated to move. To sustain an active lifestyle, start making healthier food choices!
4. You Can’t Tone Your Target Areas
Wondering why you have a big tummy? Why your hips aren’t slimming down? A bad diet keeps you from toning your body. You see, excess calories don’t burn in one workout. They head straight to your problem areas. Men usually get fat around their belly, while women gain in their hips and thighs. Even if you gain muscle in those areas, it will still be covered in fat. Keeping your diet in check will help you burn fat and maintain lean muscles.
5. You’ll Get Sick and Prone to Injuries
Finally, you can’t out-exercise a bad diet because it makes you sick. Some restrictive low-fat, low-carb fad diets can give you heart problems. A very low-fat diet with intense exercise also weakens the immune system. This means you’ll easily get colds and cough. You can also get micronutrient deficiencies that make your body prone to inflammation and injuries. We’re talking painful arthritis, stress fractures and tendonitis. This is bad news if you keep exercising with a poor diet. But you can still turn it around just by eating right.
If you feel like ditching your diet, let this article serve as a warning. We know it’s not easy, but having a bad diet only gives you more health problems in the long run.
Remember, there is no shortcut to having a healthy body. It takes a full lifestyle change to stay active and fit. You can’t out-exercise a bad diet. Exercise maintains your weight, but the right nutrition is what drives it.
